Description
Common chickweed, Stellaria media – close up photo. Stellaria media, or chickweed, is an annual flowering plant in the Caryophyllaceae family. Native to Eurasia, it has naturalized worldwide and is often considered a weed. However, it's sometimes grown as a salad crop or for poultry consumption. Chickweed is a hardy annual that flowers year-round in northern Europe, with stems up to 40 cm long and 1 mm in diameter. Its leaves are green, hairless, oval, and opposite, with a hydathode at the tip. The small flowers have 5 bifid white petals, 1-3 mm long, and are nestled inside larger, hairy sepals. The flowers quickly form capsules, and plants may have both flowers and capsules simultaneously.
