House of the Seven Gables in Salem, Massachusetts, in the 1910s – digital painting made from an old black and white photo where I added colorful painting and canvas texture. The original image is from the Detroit Publishing Co. collection at the Library of Congress. The House of the Seven Gables in Salem, Massachusetts, is a historic colonial mansion dating back to 1668. Named after its distinctive gables, immortalized in Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel, it originally belonged to Captain John Turner. Expanded over generations, it reflects evolving architectural styles, including Georgian enhancements by John Turner II. Hawthorne's connection to the house inspired his literary masterpiece, published in 1851.
