Description
Red poppy on a grass field and a burnet rose bush in the distance – digital painting made from a photo where I made some small edits and I added an aquarelle painting effect.
A poppy is a flowering plant in the subfamily Papaveroideae of the family Papaveraceae, known for its colorful flowers. Poppies symbolize remembrance for fallen soldiers, especially in the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and other Commonwealth realms, following World War I. These herbaceous plants can be annual, biennial, or short-lived perennials, growing over 1 meter tall with flowers up to 15 centimeters across. Blooming from spring to early summer, poppies secrete latex when injured, and their pollen varies in color depending on the species.
Rosa pimpinellifolia, the burnet rose, is native to western, central, and southern Europe and northwest Africa. It thrives in sand dunes or limestone pavements, often in coastal areas. This low, erect deciduous plant grows 20–140 cm high, sometimes up to 2 meters. The stems have numerous stiff bristles and straight prickles, with young growth bright scarlet and older growth deep maroon. Cream-white flowers (sometimes pale pink) produce distinctive dark purple to black hips.
